Thanks to maddog for this tip I don't have to support big shiny dealer showrooms however I had to experiment with the distance from the hub. In the end I pushed them all the way in and this worked perfectly I suspect one had been knocked out during changing of discs
By the way the tip in early problem of smoking 300tdi at load with RPM @1900-2000 was also cured by disconnection of EGR cable to EGR valve - what a joke - before this I could get anyone to back off 100yards or so by creating clouds of smoke bang on key at 2000rpm
