Hi Iain
I to have this discovery and apart from the noisy transmission when changing gears the car is great to drive.
Take a look at this web-page you might be able to find some info to help with your problem. http://www.davrian.freeserve.co.uk/roverefi.htm

: Help! We have an L-reg Land Rover Discovery with the rare 2.0 'MPi' 16 valve engine, which I believe is the same T-series lump as in Rover 820's.
:
: The vehicle has done about 90k miles. The fault is that the engine will not fire or run. This first presented itself by cutting-out whenever the throttle was touched - the enging would idle roughly (though often cut out) but as soon as the accelerator was applied it would stall.
: Now the thing won't start at all! We have fuel being injected, and a reasonable spark is present, with all new plugs. The engine is sadly not suffering from the valve stick we expected and they have just been checked (new exhaust valves fitted) becuase this is a common problem with these engines. When cranking the engine it often sounds as if it is trying to fire but then immediately cutting out. We have concluded it may well be an engine management problem...
: Could there be a fault that the ecu is detecting, causing it to shut down - perhaps this system is not that advanced, a trawl through Car Mechanics back issues and the web has found me no real info on it.
: It was suggested to us that a similar fault on this engine was caused by a failed knock-sensor but substituting a known good one made no difference. Any advice you can offer would be very appreciated!
:
: Thanks in advance
